Exploring Boundaries – Voyagers of the Islands

A new photographic exhibition highlighting the issues relating to human mobility brought about by climate change, has opened as part of the inaugural Pacific Resilience Meeting in Suva.

The photographs capture migration in the context of climate change across the Pacific and provide a deeper insight into the lives of communities affected by what is, the single biggest threat to livelihood, security and the well-being of the pacific island people.

Those attending the event included Engel Raygadas Taskforce member, Corrado Pampaloni European Union ambassador for the Pacific, Epeli Lesuma Chair of the Fiji cross and Professor Pal Ahluwalia President and USP Vice Chancellor and delegation of more than 50 from different Pacific nations.

Among the photographs is one Koro Island, off the coast Viti Levu, showing the recovery and clean-up effort by the United Nations development program following Winston Cyclone in 2016.

Another is an image of the Vanuatu Red Cross distributing relief items to families who evacuated their homes after the Manaro volcano threatened to erupt in 2018 on Ambae island, home to 11,000 people.

There are also photographs of resilient communities, one in Kiribati shows the planting of mangroves to help protect against storm surges. Another shows a handwashing demonstration at a primary school in Tuvalu, where the WHO and Ministry of Health worked to educate islanders about an outbreak of Hepatitis A there in 2017.

“I was very happy to see everyday people in action, it was more than still pictures of people giving speeches and statements, the exhibition showcases real people, in real action,” said Mr Carl Gustav-Lorentzen, the Communications Manager of International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC).

“The exhibition truly demonstrated how our Pacific people have become more resilient in the face of Climate Change over the years,” Vanda Faasoa-Chan Ting, IMPRESS Project Manager of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Government of Samoa

“It is inspiring to see so much community action in our Pacific islands being captured and shared with all to see,” said Mr Espen Ronneberg, the Climate Change Advisor of SPREP.

Exploring Boundaries – Voyagers of the Islands exhibition shows “Images of people and scenes, captured in everyday situations will illustrate that we can be different and yet like-minded, have unique means of achieving them but similar visions”.

The exhibition was curated by the GIZ Director Programs James Macbeth at the University of the South Pacific Oceania Centre Laucala campus.
