Leading Proteas batsman Hashim Amla joins Cape Town Blitz

By Ashok Ramsarup :: One of South Africa’s leading batsman Hashim Amla has decided to join the Cape Town Blitz as a batting consultant during the Mzansi Super League. The run machine retired from international cricket after World Cup earlier this year.

The 36-year-old Durban-born cricketer comes to the Cape Town team armed with a wealth of experience. He played 144 T20 games and 44 T20 International games for the Proteas.

Amla, joins another experienced cricketer Ashwell Prince to boost the side. Prince said: “Hashim is a highly talented cricketer and highly knowledgeable about the gentleman’s sport.  We are excited and look forward to him bringing experience to the players.

“There are obviously a few very promising young batsmen in the squad, and I think they will benefit immensely from having him around. It’s also a golden opportunity for Amla to explore whether a position such as a batting consultant could be something that he might want to pursue in the future. But I have great confidence that Amla will do a great job in the club,” said Prince.

Amla will join the job from the 25th this month following his brief stint in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. He will feature as an icon player and captain for the Karnatake Tuskers.

Cape Town Blitz Chief Executive Officer Nabeal Dien has been overwhelmed over Amla’s appointment to the squad.

Dien commented:  “Hashim is not only a world-class batsman, but a humble human being as well, and we are delighted that we were able to secure his services as he takes up his first consultancy role post after his international playing career.”

The Cape Town Blitz will do battle against Jozi Stars in the opening match of the Mzansi Super League at Imperial Wanderers on Friday evening.
