Padma bank annual business conference-2019

The first Annual Business Conference of the Padma Bank Limited, a fourth generation bank, was held at a star rated hotel in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday.

Finance Minister A.H.M. Mustfa Kamal, FCA, MP, was the chief guest on the occasion. Bangladesh Bank governor Fazle Kabir, banking division secretary Mohammad Asadul Islam, National Board of Revenue chairman Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, NDC, chairman of Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority Mohammad Shafiqur Rahman Patwary, Director General, RAB forces Mr. Benazir Ahmed, BPM (BAR) and Padma Bank Chairman Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat also graced the occasion.

In his speech Finance Minister said there will be no place for inefficient and dishonest officials in the country’s banking sector.

“We won’t spare any corrupt businessman who would divert bank’s fund in unproductive projects,” the minister said, adding actions would also be taken against the bankers who would aid dishonest businessmen. The Finance Minister said the government would undertake a series of reforms to create congenial business climate in the country.

“No businesses will be closed as it’s tough to start a business. We’ll extend all our support to good businessmen. We will be honest in our endeavor and our policy will help everyone,” Mr. Kamal said.

The minister also called for scaling down the amount of default loans in the banking sector. “Default loan is a major problem. The spread between interest rate on the deposit and credit increases if we can’t bring down default loans,” he said.

Among others, Chairman of Agrani Bank Dr. Zaid Bakht & MD and CEO of Agrani Bank Mohammad Shams ul Islam, MD and CEO of Janata Bank Mohammad Abdus Salam Azad, MD and CEO of Rupali Bank Mohammad Ataur Rahman Pradhan, Chairman of Investment Corporation of Bangladesh Dr. Mojib Uddin Ahmed & MD of Investment Corporation of Bangladesh Kazi Sanaul Haq were also present in the conference.

Chairman, managing directors and chief executives of different banks and financial institutions and dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Bank chairman Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat said Padma has made a successful turnaround despite all the difficulties.

“We have brought down non-performing loan, collected defaulted loans and mobilised new deposit. We are striving hard. There is no lacking in our efforts, efficiency and sincerity,” Mr. Sarafat said.

Bank MD Ehsan Khasru paid tribute to the bank’s new owners and management, saying their vision has helped the bank make a successful comeback within a short time.

“We have brought about massive changes in the bank’s operations. We have launched an array of new products. We have also unveiled a concrete action plan to make the bank one of the best in the country. We’re now implementing the plan.

” Padma is a unique bank in Bangladesh’s history wherein four state-owned commercial banks, Sonali, Janata, Agrani and Rupali, and state-run non-banking financial organization, Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) are in ownership structure.

The bank has 57 branches, providing most modern banking facilities across the country.
