Research Sharing Event on ‘Commemorating the 6th Anniversary of Rana Plaza Building Collapse’

ActionAid Bangladesh is going to organize a  research sharing event on ‘Commemorating the 6th Anniversary of Rana Plaza Building Collapse’ tomorrow on 16th April 2019 at 10:00AMat BRAC Centre Inn, Mohakhali, Dhaka. A follow-up survey on the current situation of Rana Plaza survivors will be shared. Moreover, a report titled ‘4 Million Making 50 Billion: Where RMG Sector Stands 6 Years After Rana Plaza’ with following issues will be presented.

  • Compensation and Insurance: Social Security of Workers
  • Inequality in The Global Garment Value Chain: Wage and Gender Equality

Rana Plaza building collapse incident happened on 24 April 2013 was the largest industrial tragedy in the country’s history. It remains a symbol of poor compliance in workplace safety and terrible working condition in the RMG sector. Following the tragic incident, Bangladesh RMG sector saw comprehensive reforms and improvements in different areas such as workplace safety, occupational safety and health, law and policy reforms etc. The collective effort of the stakeholders has driven institutional changes, legal and policy reforms and structural modifications to address the challenges appeared in the RMG sector following the tragic incident.

As we approach the sixth year of the deadly incident, it is time to critically review the status of the industry and progress made so far, follow-up and reflect on the situation of the affected people, and collectively devise future directions, building on stakeholder experiences.

In this backdrop, ActionAid Bangladesh is going to organize the research sharing event. Govt. officials, researchers, garments’ owners, buyers, labor union leaders, development partners and other related stakeholders will join the event. We request you to cover the event.
