South African School Forced to Shutdown Following Chemical Spillage

By Ashok Ramsarup :: South African school has been forced to shut down after scores of pupils and teachers were rushed to the hospital for treatment after inhaling a chemical substance.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said chaos erupted at the Vukuzakhe High School at Umlazi L Section in Durban after the unknown chemical substance was lurking in the air in the morning.

Jamieson confirmed that the first responders found dozens of people injured, indicating that there was chaos.  It had been alleged that a chemical substance was emitted in the vicinity of the school while some scholars were playing with a ball.

“It tore open and a powdery substance was split and it was picked up by the wind which carried the chemical substance into the classrooms.

EMRS and Rescue Care Paramedics called for more backup to assist due to the number of injuries.  Four patients, an educator and three scholars had sustained critical injuries and were stabilised on the scene.

The Lenmed1 Aeromedical Helicopter airlifted the injured to the Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre. About 60 scholars sustained minor injuries and were also transported to the hospital for further treatment.

The Bomb Squad was called in and took over the scene with the help of local detectives.
